This is information that should be available to any character with minimal research, but may not be known off-hand.
Translation: Reading this is optional, but it's a lot more in-depth that the other explanation is going to be.
------------------------
-----Prelude to War-----
------------------------
2019 - Teresa Ashcroft pioneers Arcanotech, the bastard child of magic and science, that could draw limitless energy from the world of non-Euclideian geometry. Is driven insane.
2023 - Simon Yi develops the D-Engine. Actually harnesses limitless energy from the eldritch nether. Is also driven insane.
2026, 2027 - Golvash Czeny forms the Ashcroft foundation, tests the first successful D-Engine. Though sanity is preserved across the board by splitting the research into teams, many suffer breakdowns and recurring nightmares.
From 2030 to 2051 - Over the following years, the applications of the D-Engine include anti-gravity fields and powerful mecha, along with eliminating the energy crises. Ashcroft Foundation becomes the largest corporation in the world overnight. Science is forced to accept the new displine of Arcanotech, and the face of the world is changed forever.
This quickly leads to safe, reusable space travel and colonization (Project Prometheus), underwater biodomes (Project Atlantis), and a new International Space Station.
2047 - Conflict between oil producing nations and the new D-Engine technology results in a second cold war. The New United Nations brings arcanotech into the military with the development of weaponized mecha.
------------------------------
---2050 up to the First War---
------------------------------
2052 - Meanwhile, the finding of the "Breath of R'lyeh" leads to the development of the Rites of Transfiguration, developed by the Chrysalis Corporation. It transforms its victims into horrific monsters that can transform into humans. Or is it the other way around? Regardless, this has a rather powerful effect on the victim's psyche. They are called the Dhohanoids.
2053 - All this draws the attention of the Migou, a strange combination of crustacean and fungus that developed on Pluto, and is less than pleased with our recent advancement thanks to D Engine technology. The begin to plot...
2055 to 2056 - The Migou by this point have stolen the designs for the D-Engine, and have begun the development of a race of brainwashed super-soldiers called the Nazzadi. Their task is to invade and occupy Earth without revealing the existence of their masters.
2057 - While the Migou prepare for war, the cult of Nyarlathotep (Children of Chaos) has learned of the Rite of Transfiguration, and see this as a sign of the arrival of the Old Ones. They infiltrate the Chrysalis Corporation and gain access to the Rite of Transfiguration.
2059 - Then, with Earth suddenly losing orbital stations and spacecraft, the Nazzadi armada sweeps in. The first Arcanotech War has begun. Earth unites under a single New Earth Government and declares martial law.
------------------------------
----2060s, The War Wages On----
------------------------------
2060 - While the war is waged, the Children of Chaos seek forgotten lore relating to the Old Ones. They find and transcribe a lost text on their ancient gods, only to have their research stolen by rebels who form the Eldritch Society to oppose the CoC.
2064 - As the Arcanotech war drags on, the Nazzadi war machine begins to question whether or not it has a true quarrel with humanity. They forge a new alliance, and the existence of the Migou is revealed.
2064 - The Eldritch Society develops a modified Rite of Transfiguration called the Rite of Sacred Union, which binds an otherworldly creature to a person's will. With sufficient training, it is possible to control the powers of the symbiote.
2065 to 2066 - This is followed by the formal end of the Arcanotech war, the creation of the Tagers (Symbiotes of the Eldritch Society and their primary weapon against the CoC), and the preparation of a more direct Migou offensive.
2067 - Reconstruction of the New Earth Government begins, as does the shadow war between the Eldritch Society and the Children of Chaos, each commanded Tagers and Dhohanoids respectively. Concrete jungles are replaced by gleaming arcologies, and humanity seems to have hammered out a golden age.
-------------------------------
----2070s, A New War Begins----
-------------------------------
2073 to 2074 - The Children of Chaos succeed with the Ruined King Project, the avatar of the Eldritch god Hastur enters the world. Hastur, the Unnamed One, gathers followers that soon split into two groups. The Rapine Storm, which wishes to burn mortals from the earth in blood and fire, and the Death Shadows which seek to rot society from within to pave the way for their master. Then the Migou begin their own offensive in earnest. The Second Arcanotech War begins.
2075 to 2076 - The CoC renews it's search for Cthulhu, making contact with Dagon and the Deep Ones, powerful followers of the Old One. Around Dagon forms the Esoteric Order of Dagon, composed of Deep Ones, monstrous fishmen Hybrids, and gibbering Spawn, all dedicated to controlling the seas in their hunt for the Great Lord Cthulhu.
2077 - The Rapine Storm launches a crusade of terror across Southeast Asia, and many underwater facilities are destroyed by the Esoteric Order of Dagon.
-----------------------------------
----2078 to Today, The Aeon War----
-----------------------------------
2078 - The New Earth Government officially recognizes that it deals not only with the Migou, but also numerous Eldritch cults. The Second Arcanotech War ends, and the Aeon War begins. The Migou declare war on both the Cults and the NEG.
2079 to 2083 - The NEG begins work on a new breed of powerful arcanotech mecha, named Engel. As much living being as machine, it is piloted by fusing with the creatures nervous system, and is as though pilot and weapon have become one. The Engel are later found to be bloodthirsty in their own right, often beyond the pilot's ability to control. This control is attained by permanently attuning a pilot to a single Engel by way of an arcanotech brain implant.
2084 - Engels successfully deployed as a weapon. They are difficult to manufacture and pilots difficult to train. They account for one fifth of NEGs mecha force.
2085 - Present day.
