The cold air the of the ventilation shaft made the man in the hallway shudder abruptly. He sat quietly, suddenly twitching every once and awhile to thoughts all his own. He had been sitting there an hour in his black coat and pants. His sleeves were long, both to protect against the artificial chill and conceal the artificial limb that revealed itself at the end of the right sleeve. A chrome hand, continuously warmed by the large flows of energy within.
"Blake, the Master will see you now."
Yes, he thought. He will see me now. My next mission begins.
He sat up suddenly, and the secretary disappeared back into the cubicle from whence she came. It was better that way, she had no business learning about the mission. Would be at threat, threats must be eliminated.
He walked into the room. The Master was finishing off the last of his lunch. The pale man in black twitched suddenly, a violent burst of shoulder and upper body movement that ceased only when he looked to the ceiling.
"You wished to see me Master Khan." He said politely, still not making eye contact with his immediate supervisor, who was only a few ranks removed from the Great Grand Master of the Eldritch Society.
"Yes Mr. Atkins, we have an assignment. There is word of a Children of Chaos operation in Iceland. We believe the Order of Dagon has an artifact, and no doubt the Children have the same information. We will move you and a soft squad to the coast, it's up to you from there. Good luck, your team is in the next room."
A soft squad was a group of highly trained tactical soldiers. They were, however, unaltered mortals, and thus rather squishy by comparison.
Blake could have taken down 4 or 5 soft squads in direct combat, but that wasn't what they were for.
The team was waiting outside, as he was told. There was a lithe woman who introduced herself as Kayla, tactics. Bruno was the intelligence expert, and Xavier was the gunman. They were the best of the best that normal humankind had to offer.
The new team discussed the details of the mission, reviewed blueprints, and was soon on their way to Iceland.
The base of the Esoteric order was centered in a town of Hybrids and Spawns. flanked by cliffs on both sides, the only two direct entrances were the coast and the front gate. The team would come in from the western cliffs. Yes.
The team began to move. Everyone had shifted into camo, all except for Blake who wore the same shirt as in the base. He twitched at every sound not made by the team, and was the first to hear the sound of a small child to their right.
"Everyone, shhhh."
He hushed the team and began to sneak towards the noise. She could not have been more then five. But then, her mother could very well be a Hybrid, or the Ordermaster of the town.
The air began to shimmer around Blake's arm. There was a snapping noise, and a hundred tentacles withdrew back into his sleeve.
There was no girl.
